With trust towards freedom: The concept of Open Prison in the Czech and Norwegian prison system composed by the Solutions Journalism method

The practical bachelor paper consists of a theoretical and a practical part. The theoretical part summarizes the meaning and basic principles of solution-oriented journalism, also known as solutions journalism. In addition, it will highlight the development of this genre in the Czech media environment. At the same time, this part includes an explanation of the concept of the so-called open prison and outlines the terminology needed to understand the Czech prison system. The practical part of the thesis consists of three written articles together meeting the criteria of solutions journalism. The first one covers a social issue in the form of the high number of domestic prisoners and their frequent return to imprisonment. The second article focuses on the Norwegian example of open prisons and their results in the form of low recidivism of released prisoners. The final article deals with the only open prison in the Czech Republic in Jiřice, Central Bohemia. It will outline its development and current results together with possible limits.
War Photojournalism and Violence in Worldwide Photojournalism Contests

This master's thesis researches how often and how worldwide photojournalism competitions award photographs that capture phenomena such as war conflicts, violence, and their consequences. The basis of this research is a hypothesis that shots capturing described phenomena dominate some of the contest categories. The theoretical part contains fundamental information related to the topic of the research - negativity as a news value and the concept of war frame in the journalism field. Peace journalism and solutions journalism have developed to answer to the high rate of negative content in the news, as they do not focus on the negative aspects of events, which presents a different approach to journalistic work. The relation between those two approaches and photojournalism is described in more detail, so is a brief overview of worldwide contests and their influence on the photojournalism field. The research part of the thesis combines content analysis with semiotic analysis and delves into the frequency of awarding described photographs and the content of the photographs, as well as the development in awarding such pictures in time. Positive Psychology as a Theoretical Foundation for Constructive Journalism

This diploma thesis tries to provide a theoretical basis and explanation of the interdisciplinary connection between positive psychology and constructive journalism. Constructive journalism involves the application of the tools of positive psychology in order to increase the quality of media content by creating engaging and productive news and journalism. The aim of this work is to verify the theory and methods of positive psychology and constructive journalism through research, which exposes respondents to two articles formulated in both negative (catastrophic) and positive (constructive) frames. The purpose is to find out to what extent framing affects emotions, motivation, attitude or preference and whether constructive journalism is really the right way to raise the level of journalism as such.
Reformation of Institutional Child Care in the Czech Republic Following Slovakia's Model

This bachelor thesis focuses on the emerging genre of Solutions Journalism. This new journalistic style is first described and then used in practice in two Solutions Journalism online articles about the possibilities of reformation of the Czech institutional care system, focusing on children up to three years of age. The first practical article describes the problems of the Czech institutional care and later showcases already working alternatives in the Czech Republic, mainly temporary foster care. The second article describes Slovakia's solution - professional parenthood. This form of care was first introduced in 1990s and the law today orders to primarily use this form of care for children up to six years of age.
Solution journalism in Czech Media

The thesis examines whether the media content that won the Award for Solutions Journalism meets the basic criteria of this particular journalistic approach. The qualitative content analysis is complemented by a multi-case study, which was prepared on the basis of interviews with the winners of the Journalism Award for Solutions Journalism and popularizers of this journalistic method in the Czech Republic. A multi-case study examined whether journalists deliberately developed award-winning media content using this method. The work also provides information on the conditions under which the approach has established itself in the Czech Republic while it outlines its future. The theoretical part contains the definition of Solutions Journalism, describes its classification among other journalistic approaches and its development. It briefly introduces non-profit organizations that seek to create awareness of Solutions Journalism in the Czech Republic. The main goal of the research is to confirm that in the Czech Republic the media content has been created within the framework of this journalistic approach, but it was not named as Solutions Journalism. The awarding of the Journalist Award for Solutions Journalism serves primarily as a way to raise awareness of this method.
